German MP wants DNA testing on dog poo

There are other uses for this of course - postmen can sue if they get bitten and retain some DNA evidence, paternity tests could be run when someone's bitch gets knocked up and if the dog eats your homework...

Peter Stein, a conservative politician in eastern Germany, told AFP that under his proposal, officials would test the excrement and then match it up to the offending dog using a DNA database of all pooches.

Indian boy weds bitch

The dog finally relented after it was convinced the boy was committed to the relationship. Plus it got two rings and a chain. There must be better jokes than "His wife's a bitch"...but I can't think of any.

"A group of Indian tribals have married off a toddler to a female dog in eastern India in a bid to prevent his predicted death at the hands of a tiger, a report said Wednesday."

City uses DNA to fight dog poop

So this town is analyzing the DNA of dog poop - both on the ground and in the doggie bins to reward or punish owners as appropriate. I knew this technology would one day find a more useful application than catching murderers! (Never see that on CSI...)

Hedgehogs Replace Dogs

It's like replacing a dog with a hamster. I can't see them replacing dogs, but they are cute.

LONDON (Reuters) - Can man's best friend be replaced by a prickly pal the size of your palm?

Busy pet lovers have been buying hedgehogs, whose nocturnal habits make them appealing to the modern worker because they wake in the evening when their owners arrive home after a day in the office.

"They are unbelievably pretty little creatures&, the way they bumble along, the way they poke their noses into everything," hedgehog breeder Bonnie Martin told Reuters.

Initial costs for the animal and accompanying equipment can run to 300 pounds. But hedgehogs, who can survive on cat food, are cheaper to feed because they eat a third of the household cat's daily diet, Martin said.

Five Legged Dog

Maybe they need more fire hydrants round there!

AVON LAKE, Ohio - A developmental problem split Angel the dog's leg, making her look like a five-legged pet. Veterinarian Frank Krupka, with the Avon Lake Animal Clinic in suburban Cleveland, said he's never seen anything like it.

After examining X-rays, Krupka determined that a genetic aberration split Angel's front left leg in two, leaving her with three normal legs and two distinct parts of a fourth.

Krupka said the condition doesn't cause pain but gives her problems moving around. He said surgery is unlikely on the about-7-month-old dog. Krupka said any surgery would be cosmetic and not improve the animal's walk.

Python Eats Dog

It's like some sort of cartoon! The dog's legs were sticking out the snake's mouth!

BRISBANE, Australia - A 16-foot python stalked a family dog for days before swallowing the pet whole in front of horrified children in the Australian tropics, animal experts said Wednesday.

In this photo released by the Australian Venom Zoo, a five-meter (16-foot) python swallows a pet dog whole in Kuranda, Australia, Monday night, Feb. 25, 2008. The boy and girl, ages 5 and 7, watched as the scrub python devoured their silky terrier-Chihuahua crossbreed Monday at their home near Kuranda in Queensland state.

Stuart Douglas, owner of the Australian Venom Zoo in Kuranda, said scrub pythons typically eat wild animals such as wallabies, a smaller relative of the kangaroo, but sometimes turn to pets in urban areas.

"The family that owned the dog had actually seen it in the dog's bed, which was a sign it was out to get it," he added.

"They should have called me then, but (the snake) got away and three or four days later, I was called and went around and removed it" after the dog had been killed, Douglas said.

By the time Douglas arrived, all that could be seen of the dog was its hind legs and tail.

Dog Drunk as a Dog

I've heard of "drunk as a skunk"...

A dog was hospitalized after being well over the alcohol limit, unable to stand properly and certainly unable to drive (except in Italy).

Dog Goes Back - For More??

Obedient DogWell, the dog left a couple of things behind!

clipped from news.yahoo.com

JOPLIN, Mo. - It might be understandable for a dog to run away from a veterinary clinic where he had just been neutered. But a veterinarian said the reverse happened at his clinic last week.

Dr. Steve Walstad said a lost black mixed-breed dog he called 'Radar' was waiting outside his clinic on Nov. 11, three days after a woman caring for him picked up him up after surgery and several weeks of boarding.

Walsted said that in his 28-year career, he has never heard of a dog returning to a vet's office. The dog was staying at the woman's house a mile from the clinic and had never traveled there on foot.

But, after a story and photos of the lost dog appeared, two boys from Diamond, Mo., came forward to claim the animal.

Kidnapped Dog Returned - It Needed a Bath!

Yeah, you look after it, and pretend to love it, until it needs a bath...

BOGOTA (Reuters) - A kidnapped Colombian dog held for $350,000 (170,600 pound) ransom was recovered on Friday after his abductors dropped him off at a veterinarian's office, saying he needed a bath.

When no one came to pick up the German shepherd after it was washed, the office called police who said they identified the canine as Aldo de Fescol, snatched last month from his home in a rich Bogota neighbourhood while his owners were away.

Aldo was in healthy condition but two of his kidnappers were wounded in a Tuesday shootout with police who ambushed them at a fake meeting staged to pay the extortion money.

The abductors tried to pressure the family by sending a proof of life video with a note saying, "This is how your dog cries at night."
